지난 33년 동안 매일 아침 거울을 보며 물었다. "오늘이 인생 마지막 날이라면, 오늘 할 일을 하고 싶나?" 이에 대한 답이 "아니오"고 그런 날이 연달아 계속되면, 변화의 시점이 찾아왔다는 걸 깨닫는다.
For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

'점진적 개선'이란 개념을 존중하고, 내 삶에 적용해왔다. 하지만 난 좀더 '혁명적인 변화'에 항상 매력을 느껴왔다. 왜 그런지 모르겠다. 더 어려워서 그런지도. 그건(혁명적 변화) 감정적으로 더 스트레스가 많다. 그리고 모든 사람이 "당신 완전 실패했어"라고 말하는 시기를 거치게 된다.
I have a great respect for incremental improvement, and I've done that sort of thing in my life, but I've always been attracted to the more revolutionary changes. I don't know why. Because they're harder. They're much more stressful emotionally. And you usually go through a period where everybody tells you that you've completely failed.

여러분에게 주어진 시간은 한정적이다. 다른 사람 인생을 살면서 삶을 허비하지 마라. '도그마'에 갇히지 마라. 이건 다른 사람들이 만들어놓은 것이다. 다른 사람 의견이 당신 내부의 목소리를 가라앉히게 하지 마라. 가장 중요한 건, 당신 마음과 직감을 따를 용기를 가져야 한다는 것이다.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

일은 우리 인생의 많은 시간을 차지한다. 여러분이 삶에 만족할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 당신이 하는 일이 '위대하다'고 믿는 것이다. 위대한 일을 하는 유일한 방법은 당신 일을 사랑하는 것이다. 사랑하는 일을 찾지 못했다면 계속 찾아라. 타협하지 마라. 마음에 관한 문제가 그렇듯, 그걸 발견하는 순간이 온다. 모든 위대한 관계처럼, 해마다 더 좋아지게 된다.
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.

묘지에서 가장 부자가 되는 건 중요치 않다. 내게 중요한 건, 밤마다 잠자리에 들면서 "오늘 굉장한 일을 했어"라고 말할 수 있냐는 점이다.
Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me.

내가 곧 죽는다는 걸 기억하는 건, 큰 선택을 할 수 있도록 도와주는 중요한 원동력이다. 왜냐하면 외부의 기대든, 자존심이든, 망신이나 실패에 대한 두려움이든, 뭐든 간에 죽음 앞에선 아무 것도 아니기 때문이다. 죽음을 기억하면 정말로 중요한 것만 남는다.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

미래를 보면서 (인생의) 점들을 연결할 순 없다. 오직 과거를 돌아봐야 점이 연결된다. 그 점들이 미래에 어떻게든 연결될 것이라 믿어야 한다. 여러분의 배짱, 운명, 인생, 인연 등 여러분에 관한 모든 걸 신뢰해야 한다. 이러한 접근 방식은 결코 날 실망시킨 적 없다. 이 방식은 내 인생을 크게 바꿔 놓았다.
You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
8.
혁신을 시도하다보면 실수를 할 때가 있다. 빨리 실수를 인정하고, 당신의 다른 혁신들을 서둘러 개선해나가야 한다.
Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.
9.
많은 사람들에게 '집중'이란 집중해야할 것에 '예스'하는 걸 의미한다. 하지만 전혀 그런 게 아니다. 집중이란 좋은 아이디어 수백 개에 '노'라고 말하는 것이다. 당신은 조심스럽게 골라야 한다.
People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.
10.
우리 IT업계에선 다양한 인생 경험을 갖고 있는 사람이 별로 없다. 연결할 만한 충분한 '점'들이 없고, 그래서 문제에 대한 넒은 시각이 없는 매우 단선적인 솔루션을 내놓는다. 인간 경험에 대한 광범위한 이해를 갖고 있을수록, 더 훌륭한 디자인이 나올 것이다.
A lot of people in our industry haven't had very diverse experiences. So they don't have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.

누구도 죽길 바라지 않는다. 천국에 가는 이들도 천국에 가려고 죽음을 택하진 않을 것이다. 하지만 죽음은 우리 모두가 공유한다. 누구도 죽음을 피할 순 없다. 죽음은 삶의 가장 훌륭한 발명품이다. 죽음은 삶을 바꾸는 원동력이다. 새로운 것을 위해 낡은 것을 없애 준다.
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.

창조성이란 단지 점들을 연결하는 능력이다. 창조적인 사람들한테 어떻게 그걸 했냐고 물어보면, 그들은 약간 죄책감을 느낀다. 왜냐하면 그들은 뭔가를 한 게 아니라, 뭔가를 보았기 때문이다. 그들한텐 명명백백한 것이다. 그들은 경험들은 연결해서 새로운 걸 합성해 낸다.
Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That's because they were able to connect experiences they've had and synthesize new things.

예술가처럼 창조적인 삶을 살고 싶다면, 뒤를 너무 돌아보면 안된다. 당신이 지금까지 무얼 했든지, 당신이 누구였든지 간에 그 모든 걸 내던질 자세가 되야 한다.
If you want to live your life in a creative way, as an artist, you have to not look back too much. You have to be willing to take whatever you’ve done and whoever you were and throw them away.
14.
'집중'과 '단순함'. 이게 내 원칙 중 하나다. 단순함은 복잡함보다 어렵다. 생각을 명쾌하게 해 단순하게 만드려면 굉장히 노력해야 한다. 하지만 결국 그럴 가치가 있다. 일단 단순함에 도달하면, 산을 움직일 수 있기 때문이다.
That's been one of my mantras - focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.

때론 인생이 벽돌로 당신 머리를 칠 것이다. 절대 믿음을 잃지 마라.
Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith.

테크놀로지는 아무 것도 아니다. 중요한 건 사람들을 신뢰하는 것이다. 그들이 기본적으로 훌륭하고 똑똑하다는 걸 믿는 것이다. 사람들에게 도구를 주면, 그 도구로 훌륭한 일을 해낼 것이다.
Technology is nothing. What's important is that you have a faith in people, that they're basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they'll do wonderful things with them.

고객들에게 어떤 걸 원하는지 물어보고 그걸 주려고 하면 안된다. 고객들 요구에 맞게 무언가를 만들어내면, 그들은 이미 다른 새로운 걸 원하고 있다.
You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new.

개개인으로 보면 사람들은 선하다. 하지만 그룹으로 모아놓은 사람들에 대해선 난 다소 비관적인 견해를 갖고 있다. (전체로서의) 사람들은 이 나라가 아이들을 위해 더 좋은 곳으로 만드는 데 관심이 없다.
As individuals, people are inherently good. I have a somewhat more pessimistic view of people in groups. And I remain extremely concerned when I see what's happening in our country, which is in many ways the luckiest place in the world. We don't seem to be excited about making our country a better place for our kids.

밤에 잠을 잘 자기 위해선, 그 심미성과 탁월함이 하루 내내 유지되야 한다.
For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.

흥미로운 아이디어과 막 나온 기술을 수년 간 혁신을 지속하는 회사로 변화시키려면, 많은 규율을 필요로 한다.
To turn really interesting ideas and fledgling technologies into a company that can continue to innovate for years, it requires a lot of discipline.

탁월함의 표준이 되라. 어떤 사람들은 '탁월함'이 요구되는 환경에 잘 적응하지 못한다.
Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected.

그땐 몰랐는데, 애플에서 해고된 건 내게 일어난 일 중 가장 훌륭한 일이었다. 초기 성공의 무거움 대신 모든 게 불확실한 초심자의 가벼움을 갖게 됐다. 이는 날 자유롭게 만들어서 내 인생 중 가장 창조적인 시간에 접어들게 해줬다.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

당신이 젊을 땐 텔레비전을 보면서 그 뒤에 뭔가 음모가 있을 거라 생각한다. 방송이 우리를 바보로 만들고 있다고 생각한다. 하지만 약간 나이가 들면 그게 사실이 아님을 깨닫게 된다. 방송은 정확히 사람들이 원하는 걸 주고 있다.
When you're young, you look at television and think, there's a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that's not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want.

팝 컬처도 아니고, 사람들을 속이는 것도 아니다. 원하지 않는 걸 원하도록 사람들을 설득하는 것도 아니다. 먼저 우리(애플)는 우리가 무얼 원하는지 파악한다. 그리고선 다른 사람들도 우리가 원하는 걸 원할지 말지를 파악하는 과정을 거친다. 우리는 그런 일에 꽤 능숙하다고 생각한다.
It's not about pop culture, and it's not about fooling people, and it's not about convincing people that they want something they don't. We figure out what we want. And I think we're pretty good at having the right discipline to think through whether a lot of other people are going to want it, too.

미친 사람들, 부적응자들, 골치덩어리들, 네모난 구멍의 둥근 못들... 사물을 다르게 보는 사람들, 그들은 규칙을 좋아하지 않는다. 당신은 그들 말을 인용할 수도 있고, 반대할 수도 있고, 칭찬하거나 욕할 수도 있다. 하지만 당신이 할 수 없는 하나는 그들을 무시하는 것이다. 왜냐면 이들은 세상을 변화시키기 때문이다. 이들은 인류를 앞으로 전진시킨다.
Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.

성공한 사업가와 실패한 사업가의 차이는 '순전한 인내심'이 있느냐 없느냐다.
I'm convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.
